Abstract

A constituent is introduced into molten metal, particularly between 0.02 and 0.1% of pure Mg into cast iron, by loading a predetermined solid charge of the constituent into a passage leading through an opening in the shell of a container e.g. ladle or furnace of the molten metal at a level below that of the metal surface and operating means to propel the charge at a controlled rate through the opening into the metal. The means preferably comprises a rammer attached to a hydraulic piston and cylinder. The charge may be a magnesium rod with two plugs comprising asbestos washers and graphite blocks, located in front and behind the charge, the rear plug being located in the position formerly occupied by the front plug when the charge is completely introduced into the container. Following magnesium treatment, the molten metal may be similarly inoculated with Fe-Si alloy to promote the desired spheroidal graphite structure.
