Abstract

1,083,138. Rolling. UNITED ENGINEERING & FOUNDRY CO. Sept. 24, 1964 [Oct. 7, 1963], No. 39371/63. Heading B3M. [Also in Divisions B5 and D2] A fluid control system for a rolling mill, or a paper or rubber calendering mill, includes cylinder assemblies 16 and 17 which urge the work rolls 12 towards each other, the pressure in the two assemblies being simultaneously or differentially variable by a controller 27 operating two relief valves 23 and 24. Motor-driven two-way pump 21 supply the assemblies 16 and 17, the pressures in the assemblies being determined by the axial position of control rods 36, Fig. 2, of the valves and indicated by gauges 93 and 94. The controller 27 includes two parallel shafts 57 and 63 which are connected to the rods 36, each shaft including an internally threaded worm-wheel 83 or 84, co-operating with a vertical worm 85, and an axially slidable keyed gear-wheel 61 or 65, co-operating with a pinion 67. The pinion 67 normally locked in position by a detent which, when released, allows simultaneous rotation of the gear-wheels 61 and 63 by a hand wheel 56, thus causing the shafts to be moved axially due to the rotation of their threaded portions 81 and 82 in the worm-wheels 83 and 84. For differential movement of the shafts the worm 85 is rotated by a further hand wheel to cause opposite rotation of the two worm wheels.
