Abstract

1379575 Rotary positive-displacement pumps STOTHERT & PITT Ltd 7 June 1972 [8 June 1971] 19459/71 Heading F1F An intermeshing-screw pump comprises a pair of intermeshing screws 2, 3 mounted in a casing 1 having an inlet 14 and outlet 15, screws 2, 3 being surrounded by a fixed sleeve 16 and a movable sleeve 18, the movable sleeve being attached by tie rods to a balancing sleeve 20 which surrounds labyrinth sealing means 44, 45. The sleeve 20 and means 44, 45 serve to balance fluid-pressure forces on the sleeve 18 and screws 2, 3 respectively. Sleeve 20 is engaged by a threaded spindle 21 which can be rotated to move sleeves 18, 20 axially by a control means 23 Fig. 4 (not shown). Since the high-pressure outlet 15 leads to between sleeves 18, 20 it can be seen that the differential fluid-pressures acting on sleeve 18 are cancelled by those acting on sleeve 20. Similarly the interslotting discs 44 and spacers 45 on the shafts 4, 5 supporting screws 2, 3 serve to balance the forces on the screws 2,3. Thus adjustment of the sleeves 18, 20 is made easier, such adjustment effecting a change in capacity of the pump.
