1,082,789. Liquefaction and revaporization of gases. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. May 27, 1966 [May 31, 1965; Sept. 21, 1965; Nov. 5, 1965], No. 23828/66. Heading F4P. In liquefying natural hydrocarbon gases, e.g. methane, propane, butane, by indirect heat exchange with a cooled cold-carrier fluid or in revaporizing liquefied gas by indirect heat exchange with cold-carrier fluid which is thus cooled, the carrier fluid comprises a liquid which does not solidify during the heat exchange process, has a boiling point just below, equal to or above ambient temperature and contains particles of a substance which during the heat exchange undergoes a phase change. A suitable cold-carrier fluid comprises isopen. tane diluted with 12% normal pentane or with 15% isohexane serving as freezing point depressants and the particles may comprise water or water mixed with freezing point depressants such as ammonia, glycol, alcohol. The particles may also be absorbed by silica gel, carbon dioxide or ammonia and may serve as the phase-changing particles and resulting vapour may be discharged into the atmosphere or bound by bi-carbonates and water from which the carbon dioxide and ammonia respectively are recovered. Corrosive particles may be contained in small capsules suspended in the carrier liquid. Liquid methane having been transported by tanker is revaporized in heat exchange with carrier fluid. The so-cooled fluid is transported back to the production part and used to liquefy methane prior to transport.
