Abstract

A non-woven fabric comprises a batt of fibres, a major proportion of which lie in planes parallel to the surfaces of the batt, the minor proportion being orientated to lie through said planes; the batt consists of a first stratum of shrinkable synthetic fibres and a second stratum of fibres of lower shrinkage than the fibres of the first stratum, a minor proportion of through-orientated fibres in either stratum substantially comprising fibres of the other stratum, the fibres of the first stratum being capable of shrinking by at least 10% of their original length under a load of .005 grams per denier at 150 DEG C. The through-orientation of the fibres is effected by needling the two-strata batt which is subsequently subjected to a shrinking treatment. The batt may also be impregnated with an elastomeric composition, and a polyurethane coating may be applied to one surface of the batt, preferably the surface formed by the first stratum of higher shrinkage fibres. The fibres of higher shrinkage are preferably isotactic polypropylene.ALSO:A non-woven fabric comprises a batt of fibres, a major proportion of which lie in planes parallel to the surfaces of the batt, the minor proportion being orientated to lie through said planes; the batt consists of a first stratum of shrinkable synthetic fibres and a second stratum of fibres of lower shrinkage than the fibres of the first stratum, a minor proportion of through-oriented fibres in either stratum, substantially comprising fibres of the other stratum, the fibres of the first stratum being capable of shrinking by at least 10% of their original length under a load of .005 grams per denier at 150 DEG C.
