Abstract

1,079,627. Pointing tubes. BLAW-KNOX CO. May 23, 1966 [June 28, 1965], No. 22796/66. Heading B3P. Tube-pointing apparatus comprises six equi-angularly spaced jaws 30, the inwardly-directed edges of which are V-shaped and which are forced radially inwards by an hydraulicallyoperated piston 45. Portions 83 of the edges of the jaws are cut away to leave sharp-edged projections 77 which indent the tube. Continued inward movement of the jaws then folds the tube inwardly until adjacent wall portions are touching, Fig. 4. To enable the apparatus to point small diameter tubes, Fig. 11, the jaws are relieved at 82 on either side of the apex. The jaws are mounted in a frame including a cylinder 10 which is closed at its front and rear ends by cylinder heads 18 and 22 respectively. The rear end 14 of the cylinder bore is larger than the front end 16 which is itself larger than the intermediate portion 15. A piston 45 slides in the bore 14 and has an extension 49 which slides in the portion 15. The extension 49 has radial T-slots which accommodate the jaws 30 and a wear-strip 36 which is attached to each jaw. The wear-strips are wider than the jaws and slide in the head of the T-slot so that the jaws are moved positively inwards and outwards as the piston moves forwards and backwards respectively. The rearward movement of the piston is stopped by the flanged end 66 of a manually adjustable screw 66, so that the jaws open to a pre-determined diameter at which the projections 77 just engage the tube. Hydraulic fluid is admitted through a conduit 55 to drive the piston forward and when the pressure in the system builds up at the end of the operation, the conduit 55 is connected to exhaust and fluid admitted through the conduit 56 to return the piston. At the end of the return stroke the increase in pressure stops the apparatus.
