[Also in Division F1] A fluid-operated servomotor for moving the jaw 23, Fig. 2, of a machine tool vice, mandrel or clamp, comprises a low-pressure piston 30 in a low-pressure cylinder 27, and a highpressure piston 33 which is responsive to the movement of the low-pressure piston and through which a plunger or like member 32 carried by the low-pressure piston is adapted to extend into a high-pressure cylinder 34. The pistons 30, 33 are axially slidable in the cylinder 27 which is formed by the skirt of a piston 25 on which the jaw 23 is slidable against a spring 24. Low-pressure air supplied through an inlet 29 acts on the piston 30 to exert force on a spring 39 and move the piston 33 to the left, displacing hydraulic fluid from a chamber 34 through a passage 35 in piston 25 into a chamber 26 to move the jaw 23 until it engages a workpiece abutting a fixed jaw. Continued supply of air causes the piston 30 to compress the spring which acts on piston 33 to increase the pressure in the chambers 34, 26, the continued movement of piston 30 then causing the plunger 32 to extend from piston 33 and enter the passage 35 so that the plunger effects an intensified pressure in the chamber 26 to increase the force exerted by the jaw 23 on the workpiece. In an alternative embodiment, the piston 25, Fig. 6, is slidable in a cylinder 44 and attached by a sleeve 42 to a pull-rod 40, ports 46 in the sleeve connecting chamber 26 to the passage 35. Air supplied through the inlet 29 displaces piston 30 and, by way of spring 39, the piston 33 to discharge hydraulic fluid from chamber 34 through passage 35 into chamber 26 to move piston 25 and hence the pull-rod 40 to the right. As the rod engages a load, the movement of the piston 30 cause the spring 39 and piston 33 to apply increased pressure to the fluid in chamber 26 until the plunger 32 enters the passage 35 to provide an intensified pressure in chamber 26 to increase the force applied by the rod 40.
