Abstract
1,078,700. Projectile fuzes. OERLIKONBUHRIE HOLDING A.G. March 26, 1965 [March 31, 1964], No. 13029/65. Heading F3A. A percussion fuze for spin - stabilized projectiles is provided with self-destruction means comprising a lever 18 pivoted on a pin 17. One arm of the lever extends through a slot in a sleeve 19 and bears against a thimble 10 and hence on a striker spring 9 and the other arm 18a bears against a plastically deformable element 15 held in a radial bore 13 of a sleeve 3 by a ring 14. Before launching the projectile, the end 7a of a hammer sleeve 7 bears against a rotor 5 as in Specification 740,643 to maintain a primer 6 out of alignment with the firing pin 8. The sleeve 7 is held by the sleeve 19, which in turn is immobilized by a sleeve 24 abutting a disc 25. The disc 25 is secured by a layer 26 of fuzible material as in Specification 888,579 over which a cap 27 is screwed. Movement of the lever is prevented by a sleeve 20 supported by a deformable body 21. On launching the sleeve 20 sets back due to inertia and upsets the body 21, thus freeing the lever 18. The disc 24, due to heating of the fuze tip, fuzes and releases the sleeve 19 thereby freeing the rotor, which rotates until the primer 6 is aligned with the pin 8. Centrifugal force swings the lever 18 which upsets the element 15 and stresses the destruction spring 9. If impact does not occur within a given time, due to decreasing centrifugal force, the balls 11 move inwards and release the hammer sleeve 7. The spring 9 then drives the sleeve rearwards and the pin 8 fires the primer. In a modification, the hammer sleeve is supported as in Specification 740,643 and two centrifugal levers are provided to bring about self-destruction. The two levers are immobilized by latching bolts which set back on firing against plastically deformable bodies to unlatch the levers. The elements 15 may be conical or hollow cylinders made of pure aluminium.
