Abstract
An aqueous shampoo composition comprises (a) 0.1-4.0% water-soluble polyethylenimine polymer of which a 1% aqueous solution at 100 DEG F. has a viscosity of 1.0-3.0 centipoises, (b) 4-20% water-soluble organic anionic detergent and (c) 4-20% water-soluble polar non-ionic or amphoteric detergent or mixture thereof, the weight ratio of (b) to (c) being from 2: 1 to 1: 2 and the pH of the composition being from 7 to 10 (all percentages by weight). Suitable anionic detergents (b) include (i) non-soaps such as C8-C20 alkyl sulphates or sulphonates, alkyl benzene sulphonates of C9-C15 alkyl group, alkyl glyceryl ether sulphonates, fatty acid monoglyceride sulphates or sulphonates, and sulphated fatty alcohol-ethylene oxide condensates, in particular the coconut fatty alkyl or fatty acid derivatives, and (ii) soaps such as of coconut, soybean or castor oil or tallow fatty acids, the soaps where used preferably constituting part only of the anionic component; sodium, potassium or lower alkanol ammonium, particularly triethanolammonium, salts or soaps are used. Suitable polar non-ionic detergents (c) are the amine and phosphine oxides, R1R2R3N --> O and R1R2R3P --> O in which R1 is alkyl, alkenyl or monohydroxyalkyl, and R2 and R3 are each methyl, ethyl, propyl or C1-C3 monohydroxy alkyl, in particular the dimethyldodecylamine or phosphine oxides where the dodecyl is derived from coconut alkyl. Suitable amphoteric detergents are alkyl beta-iminodipropionates, RN(C2H4CO-OM)2, alkyl beta-aminopropionates RNHC2H4-COOM, C12-C18 alkyl ammonio acetates, and long-chain imidazole derivatives (see Specification for formula) in each of which R is C8-C18 alkyl and M is a cation; again coconut alkyl derivatives where appropriate are particularly useful. The composition may also contain solvents such as ethanol, thickeners such as methyl- or carboxymethyl-cellulose, perfumes (unspecified), sequestering agents such as tetrasodium E.D.T.A., opacifiers such as zinc or magnesium stearates, sodium hydroxide to adjust the pH, and coconut mono- or diethanolamide or sodium chloride or sulphate to assist homogeneity, and is compounded in the liquid form.
