Abstract

Novel steroid derivatives having the formula <FORM:1078054/C2/1> wherein R and R1 are each hydrogen or an acyl group, said acyl group being a carboxylic acyl group having from 1-12 carbon atoms and a molecular weight less than about 200 are obtained by reducing a 3-thiocyanatosteroid represented by the formula <FORM:1078054/C2/2> wherein A is a carbonyl, b -hydroxymethylene, or b -acyloxymethylene group, with a reducing agent capable of reducing a thiocyanate group to a mercapto group, and a carbonyl group to an hydroxyl group, and if desired, to prepare derivatives wherein R is an acyl group, subsequently reacting the 3-mercapto group with an acylating agent. Pharmaceutical compositions containing the above compounds are useful as anti-progestational, anti-uterotropic and anti-deciduomatogenic agents.
