Abstract
A plastic carbonaceous composition is prepared by mixing coarse particles of a carbonaceous material with high softening point binder and then adding fine particles of carbonaceous material and a lower softening point binder. The latter two materials may be pre-mixed, or added in either order. The coarse and fine carbonaceous fraction may be obtained by sieving the same initial material, e.g. pitch or petroleum coke, charcoal, coal, or lampblack; or may be different, e.g. coarse petroleum coke and fine pitch coke. The binder may be coal tar pitch, coal tar, bitumen, or asphalt. In the example pitches made from the same tar, but having softening points of 143 DEG and 102 DEG C., were used. The paste is used to make self-baking or prebaked electrodes.ALSO:A paste for making carbon bodies is prepared by mixing coarse particles of a carbonaceous material with a high softening point binder and then adding fine particles of carbonaceous material and a lower softening point binder.
