Abstract

A homogeneous composition is prepared by adding 1-100 parts of a paste of polyvinyl chloride in a plasticizer to 100 parts of a melt containing at least 50 per cent of coal tar pitch, and stirring. Specified plasticizers are tri-tolyl and tri-cresyl phosphate, and di-butyl and di-octyl phthalate. The melt can contain road tar, creosote oil, anthracene oil, heavy naphtha, or a low melting coumarone or indene resin. Fillers, e.g. slate powder, asbestos fibre, china clay, whiting, cotton linters and slag wool, can be added.ALSO:A homogeneous bituminous composition is prepared by adding, in parts by weight, 1-100 of a paste of polyvinyl chloride in a plasticizer to 100 of a melt containing at least 50 per cent. of coal tar pitch, and stirring. Specified plasticizers are tri-tolyl and tri-cresyl phosphate, and di-butyl and di-octyl phthalate. The melt can contain road tar, creosote oil, anthracene oil, heavy naphtha or a low melting coumarone or indene resin. Addition of the paste is at a temperature at least 50 DEG C. higher than the softening point of the melt. Powdered or fibrous fillers can be added, e.g. slate powder, asbestos fibre, china clay, whiting, cotton linters and slag wool.
