Abstract

A mouldable composition containing Al borate, silicate, or phosphate, and asbestos or a finely divided metal, e.g. Cu, is produced by reacting Al oxychloride with the corresponding alkali metal salt in aqueous solution, and incorporating the asbestos or metal during or after formation. Chyrstotile asbestos may be impregnated with the oxychloride and added to the alkali metal solution, and/or Cu may be mixed with the ground product. The composition may be moulded at 200-400 DEG C. under 5-10 ton/sq. in. pressure to form a hard dense body with a s.g. of 1.9-2.5 g./c.c.ALSO:Al borate, silicate, or phosphate is prepared by reacting Al oxychloride with the corresponding alkali metal salt in aqueous solution. NaAl silicate is produced in some cases. Preferably the oxychloride is added to the alkali metal salt, e.g. NaBO2.4H2O, Na2SiO3.5H2O, or KPO3, with vigorous agitation. The product may be heated at 200-400 DEG C. under 5-10 tons/sq. inch pressure to form a hard dense body with a s.g. of 1.9-2.5 g./c.c. Reinforcing material may be incorporated during or after formation, e.g. chrysotile asbestos may be impregnated with the oxychloride; and/or finely divided metal, e.g. Cu may be mixed with the ground product, followed by moulding. X-ray data is given. Al oxychloride is prepared by passing dry HCl into ether containing Al wire and a little HgCl2 to dissolve the wire, then refluxing while adding water, and distilling off the ether (Example 1), or by passing a current between a cathode of stainless steel and an anode of Al in HCl solution (Example 10).
