Abstract
269,513. Gerlach, F. April 17, 1926, [Convention date]. Mercury - electrode apparatus; alkalies, hydrogen, and chlorine, obtaining.-In a cell for the decomposition of alkali metal chlorides of the kind in which a body of mercury circulates between the electrode chamber and an amalgam decomposition chamber at a lower level, the transfer of the mercury to the electrode chamber is effected in the presence of liquid and without shock by means of a vertical or inclined continuous or interrupted worm I having above it a horizontal disc, which may in some cases rotate with the worm. To prevent irregular motion the inner walls L of the electrode chamber are formed of smooth material such as polished granite. The inner walls of the decomposition chamber may be. similarly formed, though this is not essential. As a result of these measures a plate-shaped carbon anode may be placed within 5-10 mm. of the mercury without possibility of shortcircuiting. The electrode chamber is provided with a chlorine outlet G, and the decomposition chamber with a water-sealed bell M having a. hydrogen outlet H. The electric connection to the mercury is made by a copperplate inset in the floor of the electrode chamber. The decomposition of the amalgam may be accelerated by the introduction of grids of iron, graphite, or alloys. of vanadium or molybdenum. The body of the cell 0 may be of concrete. In a modification, the electrode chamber and the decomposition chamber are separate vessels connected by end troughs.
