Abstract
1,077,002. Air filters. FRAM FILTERS Ltd. April 17, 1964 [April 17, 1963], No. 9966/65. Divided out of 1,077,001. Heading BIT. An air filter, one particularly suitable for use in conjunction with the air intake of an i.c. engine carburettor, comprises a casing having a shallow cup-shaped body portion 17 with a generally planer base 25 and a lid 18 adapted to be removably secured so as to locate within the casing a removable annular filter cartridge 21 having resilient end closures 22, 23 adapted to sealingly engage the lid 18 and the base 25 of the body portion 17, the base 25 having at least one arcuate recess 26 shaped for peripheral sealing engagement with the corresponding end closure 23 so as to form at least one impact channel leading from an air inlet 28 at one end into communication at the other end with the interior of the casing outside the filter cartridge 21, air being thus constrained to enter the filter through the impact channel(s) and pass through the filter cartridge 21 before leaving the filter via an air outlet 31 in the base 25, as indicated by the arrows 32. If desired, small peripheral slots may be pierced in the walls of the impact channel(s) just before the air passes up into the interior of the casing, thus permitting discharge of impurity particles by centrifugal action. The end closures 22, 23 of the filter cartridge 21 are of elastomeric plastic and are preferably provided with peripheral gaskets 24 so as to ensure sealing engagement between the top closure 22 and the lid 18 and also between the bottom closure 23 and the base 25 of the body portion 17. The preferred form of filter cartridge is that described in Patent No. 751,655. The filter casing can conveniently be made from a plastics material such as polypropylene by injection moulding. It may also be made of other materials such as mild steel, in which case the impact channel(s) can be formed by pressing during manufacture of the casing body portion.
