[Also in Divisions G and G3] In a control system for a machine tool, the position of a member is determined by coarse and fine capacitive elements connected across an A.C. supply. A desired positioning sequence is carried out manually and each position is stored as the settings of fine and coarse potentiometers, connected to the capacitive elements in a bridge network or as balancing potential dividers to the rectified tapped potentials of the capacitive elements. During automatic operation the fine and coarse potentiometers are sequentially selected in an undisclosed manner and the member moved to the desired position by a closed loop servo system.
