[Also in Divisions F2 and G3] In an automatic tension control system for a web winder, a dancer roll riding on the web adjusts a pair of voltages energizing an eddy current brake associated with the cage of an epicyclic gear in the drive to the winder. As described, vertical movements of a dancer roll 22, Fig. 3, riding on a paper web 10 being wound in a printing press, operate one voltage selector 38 directly through a lever 30, and another voltage selector 220 through an hydraulic ram 240, a spring-restrained lever 270, and a gear chain 282. Ram 240 is coupled to a reservoir Q through one-way restrictor valves R, S adjusted to give the desired movement of voltage selector 220 in dependence on rate of variation of tension. The two voltage selectors are connected in cascade across a voltage source to control the energization of an eddy-current brake coupled through a belt 200 with the cage of an epicyclic gear located in the drive through a manually disengageable and reversible one-way clutch to the winding roll. Tension is thus maintained at a value dependent on the setting of a knob 300 which positions voltage selector 220 relative to lever 270.
