Abstract

A cyclic formaldehyde oligomer and an ethylene glycol monovinyl ether of formula CH2 = CH-O(CH2-CH2O)nH, where n is a whole number are copolymerized in the presence of a cationic catalyst and in an inert atmosphere. Specified ethers are beta-hydroxy-ethyl vinyl ether and diethylene glycol vinyl ether. The concentration of the ether may vary from 0.1 to 40% of the formaldehyde source which may be trioxane or tetroxane. The catalyst is preferably a Lewis acid e.g. boron fluoride and its co-ordination complexes. The polymerization may take place in bulk or solvent e.g. hydrocarbons and substituted hydrocarbons followed by alkaline washing.
