Abstract

A calender stack - for example a super-calender stack having resilient and non-resilient rolls - has means to lift successive rolls, starting from the uppermost, to space them from adjacent rolls and a loading device arranged to be able to load an intermediate roll ranged to be able to load an intermediate roll and the roll or rolls below it when the rolls above it have been lifted. The loading device which may be an hydraulic cylinder is adjustable vertically to vary the roll on which it is operative. A hydraulic cylinder is also mounted at the top of the stack to load the top roll when all the rolls are in use, the cylinder also being used to lift the rolls by means of a screw threaded spindle. A slide is used to hold the spindle in a raised position.
