Abstract

Organic nitriles are prepared by admixing (1) a phosphonitrilic chloride, (2) an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or ammonium salt of an aliphatic or aromatic carboxylic acid and (3) an ammonium salt or amide of an inorganic acid, urea, ammonium carbamate or the ammonium salt of the acid whose salt is employed as (2) and heating the mixture. When employing an ammonium salt as reactant (2) it is unnecessary to add a nitrogen containing compound (3) to the reaction mixture.
