Abstract

Vitreous enamel and glazed ceramic objects are coated by applying an alkyl or alkanolamine titanate to the surface thereof, heating the surface to a temperature at which the titanate decomposes to titanium dioxide and thereafter recovering, after cooling, a vitreous enamelled or glazed ceramic object having a high lustre. The surface may be heated during or subsequent to the application of the organic titanium compound to a temperature in excess of about 400 DEG C., e.g. 500 to 750 DEG C. The titanate may be an alkyl titanate polymer containing from 2 to 10 titanium atoms, and may contain alkyl group having from 1 to 5 carbon atoms. Each alkyl or alkanol residue of the titanate may contain from 2 to 5 carbon atoms. The alkanolamine titanate may be triethanolamine titanate. The titanate may be applied dissolved in a solvent, e.g. hexane, benzene, white spirit, alcohol, or water, or as a vapour in a carrier gas or as an aerosol, or by spraying or by dipping in a bath of the compounds or solution thereof. Sufficient of the titanate is applied to give a coating of TiO2 of at least 2 millimicrons average thickness, e.g. at least 100 millimicrons average thickness.
