Abstract

A molybdenum or molybdenum-alloy article having a silicon-containing refractory coating such as molybdenum disilicide is further provided with a surface layer comprising silica. The silica coating may be produced by applying an aqueous suspension of colloidal silica and drying, in which case a plurality of applications may be made, or by the hydrolysis in situ on the surface of ethyl silicate. Boric acid may be included in the coating composition or applied subsequently as a solution, by dipping.
