Abstract

1,075,593. Screw drivers. DESOUTTER BROS. Ltd. Jan. 5, 1966 [Jan. 22, 1965], No. 2859/65. Heading B3N. [Also in Division F2] A portable power-driven screw driver, or impact wrench comprises a pneumatic or electric motor 5, Fig. 1, driving a hammer cage 9, hammers 10, (11), pivotally supported in the cage by pins 12, 13, a cupshaped anvil 4 and a declutching member 18. Cage 9 has a splined connection 7 with the rotor 6 of motor 5, and hammers 10, (11) co-operate with abutment faces (17), Fig. 6 (not shown), in anvil 4, to impact the latter. Declutching member 18 has dogs (19) which project therefrom, member 18 being rotatable independently of the cage and anvil and being caused to abut the trailing ends of the hammers, due to inertia, to thus disengage the hammers from faces (17) after each impact. A rod 20 engages the tool 3 at one end and an air valve 24 at the other end; the valve being opened to supply the motor when the tool is pressed against the work. The hammers rotate the anvil until the screw is tight, whereupon the motor stalls, and the anvil is impacted. The tool can be used for right or left-handed operation.
