Abstract

1,074,835. Bulk cargo vessels; decks; compartments. ALGONQUIN SHIPPING & TRADING Ltd. June 29, 1964 [May 4, 1964], No. 26797/64. Headings B7A and B7S. A deck structure for bulk cargo vessels having hatch openings at deck level leading to feeder trunks 21 for the holds comprises deck surfaces angled inwardly and upwardly from the sides of the vessel, the said surfaces defining the hatch openings, a water ballast tank 12 and a ventilating duct 13 under the port and starboard deck surfaces, the lower surface of said tank 12 and duct 13 being sloped at least 30 degrees to the horizontal, a hatch cover 20 for each trunk 21 and means securing the hatch covers to said deck surfaces. As shown, the hatch cover 20 is secured to the deck by means of bars 25 which engage brackets (Fig. 8, not shown) welded to the cover. The bars are slidingly engaged by lugs mounted on brackets 22 welded to the deck. The ventilation ducts 13 which enclose service piping 34 extend longitudinally to provide ventilation for every hold. Control of ventilation is by means of a valve (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown) located on the side walls 31. When the vessel carries oil the oil loading and unloading pipes 36 are immediately taken below deck through connection 37 to a junction box 38 located within ballast tanks 12 and from there connection is made with the distribution pipes 39. Similarly the oil and bilge stripping pipes 40 are taken from deck level.
