Abstract

1,074,626. Diaphragms for pneumatic springs. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. April 8, 1964 [April 25, 1963 (2)], Nos. 16249/63 and 16250/63. Heading F2S. A diaphragm of elastomeric material, e.g. for a fluid spring, has at least one beaded edge provided with a bead reinforcement which is extensible in the circumferential direction of the edge but is comparatively unyielding in the transverse direction. As shown an annular lobe-type flexible rubber diaphragm 10 is provided with thickened outer and inner bead portions 11, 12 respectively with reinforcements 13, and is provided with a reinforcement, made e.g. of a fabric, which is wrapped around the reinforcements 13. Each reinforcement 13 comprises a length of helically-wound spring wire the ends of which are intertwined to form a ring which is wholly embedded within the rubber of the bead 12 or 13 during the manufacture of the diaphragm. On assembly the outer bead 11 is fitted into a gutter 17 at the lower end of a container 15 and the upper end 18 of a frusto-conical container 16 is spun over the diaphragm bead 11.
