Abstract

A radiation-recording element comprises a photo-conductive material and an electroluminescent material, mixed or in separate layers, such that the photoconductive material remains in a conductive state for more than 0.5 seconds after illumination, e.g. by X-rays, and the electroluminescent layer may subsequently be energized to reproduce the illumination. A thin semi-conductor layer, opaque to visible light, may be included between the photoconductive and electroluminescent layers. The electroluminescent layer may be formed of zinc sulphide doped with silver, a halogen, and preferably copper, dispersed in a silicone resin. The photoconductive layer may be a zinc oxide resin, dispersed in a binder of e.g. a styrene alkyl resin, silicone vinyl acetate or vinyl chloride, 50 micron thick, or e.g. selenium doped with tin bromide, lead iodide, antimony iodide or lead bromide, and may have an image persistence of up to one hour, the image being erased by heat or infra-red radiation.
