Abstract
1,073,858. Nuclear fuel elements. ATOMIC ENERGY OF CANADA Ltd. Aug. 11, 1965 [Aug. 28, 1964], No. 34415/65. Heading G6C. A nuclear fuel element comprises an inner layer of heat-treated uranium metal containing 200-500 p.p.m. Fe and 500-1200 p.p.m. Al enclosing a central void space, a middle layer of a uranium alloy containing 30-60 wt. per cent Zr, 1-25 wt. per cent Mo or Nb, or 50-95 wt. per cent A1, and an outer sheath of zirconium alloy. The uranium may be natural or enriched. The middle and outer layers provide restraint on the core so that any swelling is directed to the void apace. The elements may be formed by co-extrusion, by shrink fitting the sections together, or by co-extruding the outer layers and casting the uranium core. The elements are corrosion-resistant when used in pressurized water or steam cooled reactors; they may also be used in organic cooled reactors.
