Abstract

Fuel element rod has a metal sheath enclosing both fuel and moderator. The fuel is in the form of a layer on the inside of the sheath and is separated from the moderator by a metal lining and by a barrier layer to prevent hydrogen diffusion. In the pref. embodiment, the sheath and lining are stainless steel, the nuclear fuel is a UO2/steel cermet the diffusion barrier is an enamel/glaze and the moderator is yttrium hydride or zirconium hydride.
