Abstract

A magnesite chrome refractory brick comprises (i) 5-40% by weight chrome ore particles of - 4 + 28 mesh (Tyler) containing not more than 5% SiO2, (ii) granular magnesia of - 4 mesh, particularly - 4 + 65 mesh, containing not more than 1% Fe2O3, 2% CaO and 2% SiO2 and (iii) 5-40% by weight clinker particles of - 65 mesh being a fired homogeneous mixture of magnesia and 5-15% of a crystal growth promoting agent comprising one or more of chrome ore, iron oxide, titanium dioxide, and chromium oxide; the brick is made by mixing the coarse chrome ore particles with a binder to coat the particles, adding the clinker particles to coat the chrome ore particles, mixing in the granular magnesia with further binder, pressing the mixture into shapes and firing the shapes at 1600-1700 DEG C. The binder may be waste sulphite liquor or Epsom salts.
