Abstract

A cementitious refractory composition comprises a finely-divided non-plastic magnesia and 0.1-15% by weight of at least one aliphatic hydroxy tricarboxylic acid or salt thereof, e.g. citric acid or citrates. The composition may also include 10-60% of a refractory aggregate, e.g. periclase, dead-burned magnesite, chromite, chrome, alumina, spinels such as magnesia-chromite, magnesium aluminate, magnesium ferrite and chrome-iron oxide, olivine, forsteritic periclase, carbon, iron ore, dead-burned dolomite, grog, silica, clay, diatomaceous earth, mica or expanded vermiculite. The composition may be mixed with a tempering liquid, e.g. water or alcohol, cast, hardened and dried. Other binders, e.g. magnesium sulphate, magnesium chloride, boric acid, or sodium silicate, may be employed in addition.
