Abstract

An etch resistant film is formed on a magnesium or zinc base by immersing in an aqueous chromate solution (pH 1.3 to 5.0) comprising either 50 to 180 g/1 of sodium dichromate and 10 to 50 g/1 of potassium chromium sulphate or 8 to 12 g/1 of chromic acid. After drying, a photo-conductive zinc oxide-resin composition is deposited on the chromate coating. The base may be first cleaned using either an alkaline solution or a slurry of pumice powder and a 50 g/1 aqueous solution of trisodium phosphate. The coating is heated to 150 to 275 DEG C., before or after depositing the photo-conductive coating.
