[Also in Division B3] In a method of making a split mould for use in low-pressure moulding of thermoplastic materials a former shape is made in two halves 43, 44, which are located on a baseplate 46 by dowels 45. Plates 47, 47A, which surround the formers, are fitted to provide cavities in the finished half mould. The cutaway end portions of the plates allow for the formation of stop pads into which locating dowels 49 are inserted. The formers are electrically or chemically coated with copper and a main coat of nickel deposited therein, either electrically or by spraying. Before depositing the main coat, reinforcing ribs may be positioned as required. When completed, the half moulds are removed from the former and mounted on back plates. In alternative embodiments the half moulds may be built up from an aluminium, ceramics, thermosetting plastics and synthetic resins.
