Abstract
1,072,679. Suction grippers on lift trucks. HYSTER CO. Dec. 6, 1963, No. 48275/63. Heading B8H. A suction gripping device 22 is connected to the lifting carriage 17 of a masted lift truck by means of a universal joint 21. As shown in Fig. 1A, a hollow shaft 23, secured rigidly to the carriage 17, projects through a hole in a plate 25 secured to the suction head 19 and a resilient sealing washer 29 is retained between the plate 25 and a plate 31, secured to the shaft 23, thereby allowing universal tilting movement of the head 19 on the shaft 23. The head 19 is prevented from rotating on the shaft 23 by means of a pin 35 secured to the head and engaging in a slot in the plate 31. In operation, the mast M is tilted forwardly and the suction head is brought into engagement with the load. On raising the lifting carriage and/or tilting the mast rearwardly, the lower end of the suction head engages stabilizing stops 43 on the lifting carriage. In a second embodiment, Figs. 8-15 (not shown), the suction head is connected by means of a universal joint to a back plate which is rotatable on the lifting carriage by a hydraulic motor driven pinion engaging inwardly directed teeth on a rearwardly extending flange of the back plate. The stops 43 are replaced by rollers, which are adapted to engage the rotatable back plate, or by electromagnetically actuated latches adapted to look the head to the back plate. In a modification, Figs. 16-20 (not shown), the suction head is concave, Fig. 16 (not shown), for use in handling cylindrical loads and is rotatably mounted on a plate which is connected adjacent its top to the lifting carriage by means of a universal joint, Fig. 17 (not shown). The head is rotated by a pair of hydraulic rams mounted on the plate and having toothed pistons which engage a pinion secured to the head. The lower end of the plate is connected to the lifting carriage by a pair of pivoted telescopic members surrounded by compression springs.
