Abstract

1,072,075. Printing processes. RADIO CORPORATION OF AMERICA. May 21, 1965 [June 12, 1964], No. 21694/65. Heading B6C. [Also in Division G2] Electrostatic charge for effecting transfer of a developed electroscopic powder image, is carried on a dielectric sheet, which is pressed into contact with the back of the transfer sheet, whose front is pressed against the powder image. As shown, an endless band 28a of a polyethylene terephthalate dielectric is charged by a corona device 15a so that it attracts and carries a transfer sheet 30 into contact with a powder image on a zinc oxide coated paper web 10a attached to a drum 54. The transfer is effected, under the influence of the charge on band 28a, as the sheet 30 separates from the web on the drum and is guided into shoot 68. Heater 72 fixes the image. Paper web 10a is charged at 15 and exposed to the image, formed on a thin-walled cathode-ray tube, through a transparent web 44 which has a low coefficient of friction to reduce wear. The exposed web is cut-off at 52 and attached to drum 54. The electrostatic latent image is developed with a mixture of pigmented shellac toner and iron filings applied by a rotary brush 56. Any iron filings entrained on the developed surface are removed by electromagnet 60. The same electrostatic latent image may be developed a number of times, on successive revolutions of drum 54, to provide multiple copies. If a single developed image is required, paper web 10a is delivered at shoot 78.
