Abstract
In an oxidation reaction of hydrogen halide, the effluent gases containing water, halogen and hydrogen halide are dried under adiabatic conditions with hygroscopic solution of a metal halide (e.g. CaCl2) or H2SO4. The hygroscopic solution increases in temperature and is subsequently dehydrated by flashing under reduced pressure and adiabatic conditions; it is recycled to the drying zone. The dried effluent gas is condensed to obtain substantially pure halogen; if this is chlorine the effluent gases should be dried to a water dew point of less than - 30 DEG F. in the drying zone. A portion of the flashed hygroscopic solution (e.g. 20%) may be recycled to the drying zone at a temperature below that at which the dried effluent is removed. A two-stage drying zone may be employed, the hygroscopic solution is supplied to the first stage at the temperature at which it leaves the flashing zone and at least 85% of the moisture may be removed in this zone, the remainder being removed by the cooled hygroscopic solution which is supplied to the second portion of the zone. The drying zone is constructed of acid resistant material and the H2SO4 supplied countercurrent to the effluent gas flow in a zone packed, e.g., with raschig rings.
