Abstract
1,263,867. Production of dry hydrogen chloride. SIGRI ELEKTROGRAPHIT G.m. b.H. 2 March, 1970 [21 March, 1969], No. 9959/70. Heading B1B. [Also in Division C1] Hydrogen chloride gas is produced from aqueous hydrochloric acid, supplied through duct 8, by heating the acid in heat-exchanger 7 and passing it into vessel 18 where it is mixed with concentrated sulphuric acid from tower 9 so that the mixture contains at least 50%, preferably 70 to 90%, by weight H 2 SO 4 , which mixture flows as a film down the tubes of heater 17. The moist HCl gas, produced in vessel 18 and heater 17 is dried in tower 9 by countercurrent contact with concentrated sulphuric acid; and the gas is further dried by intense cooling in heat-exchanger 10. The dried gas is separated from condensate in separator 11. The mixture leaving heater 17 is submitted to flash evaporation in vessel 16 which is maintained under reduced pressure by vapour jet unit 12. The moist HCI vapours produced in vessel 16 flow to condenser 19, and the condensate is returned to the mixing vessel 18. The aqueous sulphuric acid, pumped from vessel 16 through duct 5, is concentrated; and the concentrated acid is returned to vessel 18 through duct 6, heat-exchanger 7, and drying tower 9. Those parts of the apparatus which are contacted with sulphuric acid are made of, or lined with, graphite.
