[Also in Division F2] Pliers for applying a non-resiliently deformable retaining ring in a groove on a shaft or in a bore, comprise three jaws having arcuate surfaces, for engagement with a periphery of a retaining ring, the three jaws being supported on a pair of handles which are pivoted to each other. The pliers, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown) comprise a pair of handles pivoted to a plate (36) having at its upper end an arcuate jaw (42) and a pair of arcuate jaws (44), (46) pivoted together at (48) and having extensions (50), (50<SP>1</SP>) to which the handles are pivoted at (56), (56<SP>1</SP>). Inserts for the jaws may be provided. In a modification, Figs. 3-5 (not shown), a plate (36) having a circular aperture (72) is coupled to the handles (32<SP>1</SP>), (34<SP>1</SP>) by the pivot (62), integral pins (64), (68) on the handles extending respectively into apertures (66), (70) in the plate. The handles carry jaws (44<SP>1</SP>), (46<SP>1</SP>) having arcuate recesses which co-operate with the aperture (72). The end faces (74), (76) of the jaws lie along a radius of the aperture (72). In another modification, Figs. 6-11 (Figs. 7-11, not shown), the handle 81 carries a head 84 in which a block 90 is slidably mounted, the block having a rack bar (96) provided with teeth (98) in meshing engagement with teeth on the head of the handle 82. The block 90 is mounted on jaw 102 having an elliptical opening providing an arcuate abutment surface (110). The jaw 102 is provided with two inclined tracks (112), (113) in which a pair of jaws 118 (123) are reciprocally mounted, all these jaws having grooved abutment surfaces. In another modification, Figs. 15-19 (Figs. 16-19, not shown), the jaws (144, 158, 166) have projections (146, 162, 170) provided with arcuate abutment surfaces adapted to engage the inner periphery of a ring and to enter the end of a tubular shaft to expand a ring placed in the bore. The L-shaped block 142 mounts a pair of parallel pins 184, 186 which are telescopically received in the stationary jaw structure 144. Movement of the block 142 causes the pins 184, 186 to move to the right and push the rails (160, 168) of the other jaws (158, 168) along the inclined tracks (150, 152) provided in the jaw structure 144, to cause the abutment surfaces of the jaws to apply pressure to the ring in an outward direction.
