Abstract

Process for retaining leakage streams from separation systems using semi-permeable membranes involves surrounding the outside of the separator with a liq. which acts as a biological screen. The liq. can completely surround the device as a static bath or be recycled as a circulating flow. Should a leakage of liq. in the separator occur into the surrounding liq., this can then be refed through the separator to remove the contamination. This is achieved by four or three way valves in the circulating liq. stream. Reverse osmosis or ultra-filtration can be used to separate water from solns. of radioactive materials. The semi-permeable membrane is permeable to H2O but not larger radioactive molecules. Biological screening is by immersion in water.
