Abstract
Novel racemic and laevorotatory compounds of the formula <FORM:1071304/C2/1> and acid addition salts thereof, wherein R is H, a C1- 5 unsaturated or saturated aliphatic radical, or acyl; and R2 is cyclopropylmethyl or cyclobutylmethyl, are prepared either by reacting a compound of formula <FORM:1071304/C2/2> with an agent which yields the cyclopropylcarbonyl or cyclobutylcarbonyl group, and reducing the carbonyl group in the resulting morphinan of the general formula <FORM:1071304/C2/3> wherein R1 has the above significance and R3 is a cyclopropyl or cyclobutyl group to CH2, e.g. by means of LiAlH4, or by condensing the compound of the second formula given above with a cyclopropylmethyl or cyclobutylmethyl halide and when required converting the product to an ether, ester or acid addition salt. Pharmaceutical compositions comprise a compound of the first formula given above, or a salt thereof with a medicinally acceptable acid, in admixture with a compatible pharmaceutical carrier. They may take the form of a solid or liquid, suitable for oral or injection administration.
