Abstract

Leather is dyed or printed using a solution of a dye in a formamide, e.g. formamide, methylethyldimethyl- and diethyl-formamide. The solution may also contain water as well as one or more alcohols, ketones, aldehydes, ethers, esters, alkylene halides, glycols, polyglycols, glycol ethers and glycol esters, amines, amides, aminoalcohols, alkylamines and heterocyclic nitrogenous compounds. The solution may further contain film-formers, e.g. casein, albumin, nitrocellulose, polyacrylic acid esters, polybutadienes or their copolymers, and thickeners, e.g. alginates, polysackerides, gelatine, and synthetic polymers, levelling agents, tanning agents and sulphonated oils may also be added. The dyes may be azo dyes (including metallized dyes), nitro, anthraquinone, basic or reactive dyes. The dye solutions may be applied by dipping, pouring, spraying, plush-wheeling, brushing, wiping, coating padding or printing at room or elevated temperatures. Examples are given.
