A prefabricated metal staircase unit 100 (Fig. 7) with a number of flights of stairs, such as 121, 122, 123 and 124 (Fig. 8), is of a generally W form as shown and at the centre point thereof a cable for balanced lifting may be attached (Fig. 5), a pair of members 133, 132 which are under tension when the unit is lifted being connected to said W form at the centre and end points thereof. The flights 121, 123 and 125 (Fig. 7) are shorter than the adjacent following flights 122, 124 and 126, a supporting member 115, 117 and 119 connecting one end of each flight 121, 123 and 125 to the said tensioned member 133 (Figs. 5 and 7). In the form of Fig. 11 the flight 221, longer than the other flights is adjacent a flight 222, the connection therebetween by a platform 215 forming a cantilever in cooperation with a portion of the flight 221. In a further form where the second flight is the longest; there is a horizontal unit between the third and fourth flights and within the four vertical members. The first flight is supported directly on the base member and two vertical members are added to at the top resulting in further horizontal members.
