Abstract

Polyethyleneimine and lignin are condensed together, the amino groups of the former reacting with the hydroxyl groups of the latter. The reaction is preferably carried out in an aqueous medium at 30-100 DEG C., and the product is water-soluble. Suitable lignins include lignosulphonic acid, lignosulphonates, thiolignin, and alkali lignins. The molecular weights of the polyethyleneimines used in the examples ranged from 30,000 to 100,000. Uses.-Coatings on glass, metals, textiles and paper sheets (and subsequent lamination) and for treating paper pulp or sheets (treatment with the components of the condensate separately included).ALSO:Paper pulp and paper sheets are treated with the condensate of polyethyleneimine and lignin. Aqueous suspensions of the pulp are successively treated with the components of the condensate, and the pulp then formed into sheets, or paper sheets are treated directly. Conventional additives may be added to the pulp suspension. Efficient bonding between the pulp or sheets, and the condensate may be effected by heating to promote cross-linking. Suitable lignin include lignosulphonic acid, lignosulphonates, thiolignin and alkali liqnins.ALSO:Glass, metals, paper and textiles are coated with a condensate of polyethyleneimine and lignin. Bonding between the substrate and the condensate may be effected by gentle heating to cause cross-linking. In example (3) glass and metal are treated with the condensate of an alkali lignin and polyethyleneimine.
