A cylinder printing-machine comprises (1) a vertical frame 16, 17 in which can be adjustably mounted an impression cylinder 21 for printing from an intaglio or a relief printing-plate or a scraper-bar 20 with a bevelled lower edge for printing from a lithographic plate, (2) a horizontal frame 14 upon which a printing-plate-carrying bed 13 is slidable beneath the cylinder 21 or bar 20 and (3) a driven roller 31 slidablymounted in the frame 17 so that it can be lifted into engagement with the underside of the bed to drive the bed. A screw 18 engages a threaded member 29 fixed to the frame part 16 and is rotatably-attached at its lower end to a member 19 slidable in the frame parts 17. The scraper-bar 20 can be attached to the member 19 by a screw 25, or brackets 26 carrying the impression roller 21 can be secured to the member 19 by screws 23. Slidably-mounted in the lower ends of the frame parts 17 are brackets 33 carrying the driving roller 31. A rod 35 rotatably mounted in the frame parts 17 below the roller 21 carries cams 36 and is turned by a handle 37 so that the cams raise the roller 31 into engagement with the bed. A reversible driving-motor 11, coupled to the shaft 32<SP>1</SP> of roller 31 by chain-and-sprocket gearing, is carried by bracket 47 slidable vertically on the frame 17, the lower end of bracket 47 being secured to one of the brackets 33 so that the drive is unaffected as the roller 31 is raised and lowered. The horizontal frame 14 comprises angle members 38 with turned-down feet 40 and joined at their outer ends by cross-bars 39. The inner ends of the members 38 are each connected by two screws 42 to arms 41 fixed to the frames 17 so that by removing one screw 42 of each pair, the members 38 can be rotated into an approximately vertical position (Fig. 5) for rendering the apparatus portable. The bed 13 which is made of fibreboard rests upon rollers 43, 43<SP>1</SP> on the members 38 when the machine is inoperative, but the highest part of the roller 31 is a little above the rollers 43, 43<SP>1</SP> when the roller 31 is in operative position so that the bed 13 tilts as it passes from one end to the other of its travel. In operation, the inked &c. printing plate is placed on the bed 13 with the paper to be printed thereon, and the appropriate impression member 20 or 21 is fixed to the member 19 which is adjusted by the screw 18 to give the required pressure. The motor 11 is started and the roller 31 raised so that a printing stroke is effected. At the end of the stroke, the roller 31 is lowered thus allowing the bed 13 to drop on to the rollers 43 so that the printed paper can be removed.
