A multiple-burner flame cutting machine has its burners such as 40, Fig. 3 (not shown), set on a setting device 60, Fig. 5 (not shown), separate from the machine. The machine is used to prepare double bevel edges on plates 18, Fig. 3 (not shown), to be welded and includes two inclined burners and a central vertical burner using propane and oxygen. The burners are adjustably mounted on a mounting plate 22 detachable from the machine head and positively located thereon by dowels 28 and a stud 32, Fig. 1 (not shown). A wheel 14 runs on the plate surface to maintain the correct height of the burners. For setting the angles and longitudinal positions of the burners there is provided a gauge 60, Fig. 5 (not shown), comprising burner carriers 62, 64 pivotally mounted by pins 89, 91 on protractor carriers 86, 88 and clamped thereto by handles 90, 92. The carriers have protractor scales 66, 68 co-operating with cursors 70, 72 on the burner carriers. Vertical adjustment of the carriers 86, 88 is effected by lead screws 78, 80 operated by handles 82, 84; this adjustment is indicated on a scale 102. The gauge 60 has dowels and a stud 74 to receive the mounting plate 22 with the burners which are then located on the burner carriers 62, 64 by ribs 98 engaging in slots 50 in the burner holders 42, Fig. 4 (not shown). The burners are clamped to the plate 22 in their adjusted positions and the plate is then removed from the setting gauge and replaced on the machine head. Eccentric adjustment sleeves 43, Figs. 3,4 (not shown), are provided between the burners and their holders 42. In another embodiment, Figs. 6-12 (not shown), the protractor carriers such as 110 are mounted on opposite sides of the setting gauge.
