In an arrangement for dipping the headlamps of a vehicle on the approach of another vehicle, a photo-resistance 1 mounted in a forward-looking position controls through a two-stage transistor amplifier 4, 5 a relay 10 operating change-over contacts 12, the amplifier being such that the light-level required to hold the relay is considerably less than that required to operate it initially. The resistor 15 produces a degree of negative feedback and tends to stabilize the amplifier besides reducing the effects of temperature. The potentiometer 6 provides a sensitivity control. The normal dip switch 13 is effective when the relay 10 is inoperative.
