Abstract

Rectilinear motion of a block 34 is converted into unidirectional stepwise rotation of an output member 29, a crank-pin 30 on the output member engaging an arcuate cam-slot 32 in the block 34, and a tangent to one end of the slot being parallel to the direction of motion of the block. In an indexing mechanism, four equispaced crank-pins 30 are retractably mounted in the face of the output member 29, each crankpin in turn being moved into engagement with the slot 32 by spring or fluid pressure means. When the crank-pin engaging the slot has been moved through 90 degrees by leftward movement of the block 34, e.g. due to an hydraulic ram, a ramp 33 at said one end of the slot 32 returns the crank-pin to its retracted position, where it is held, e.g. by friction or a ball catch and the output member is locked against rotation by suitable means while the block makes its return stroke. The next crank-pin is then moved to engage the cam-slot, and the operation repeated. Figs. 1-3 (not shown) illustrate a mechanism of this type but having an oscillatory angular output.
