Abstract

A spanner has a head 12 in which a spanner ring 16 is rotatable. The ring 16 has a ratchet 24 and is rotated by pawls 32 on reciprocating rods 30. The rods are operated via a rod 40 by a hand lever 44 at the opposite end of an arm 10. The head 12 and ring 16 are not complete annuli but are interrupted at 22 to permit insertion on a nut located on a shank with no free end. The spanner is useful in confined spaces, since the arm 10 need not move as in conventional spanners. Spring biassed friction detents are provided to prevent return travel of the ring 16 during ratchet operation. <IMAGE>
