Apparatus for testing the radial run-out of a gear-wheel 25 comprises a probe 23 which is automatically and continuously projected into the tooth gaps of the gear-wheel to record the maximum depth of said gaps, the probe 23 being mounted on a beam 17 which is moved by a continuously rotating spigot 10 which is eccentric in relation to a drive thereto, a constantly acting force 11 being exerted in a radial direction to press the spigot 10 against a cone-shaped body 12 whose axis is disposed substantially parallel to the axis of the spigot so that adjustment of the cone-shaped body in the axial direction causes the eccentricity of the spigot to be varied. The spigot 10 is mounted eccentrically on a plate 9 which reciprocates in a guide 8 being pressed outwardly by spring 11 so that a roller 13 on spigot 10 bears against the interior wall of the hollow cone 12. The guide 8 is rotated by a motor 3 causing the spindle 10 and therefore the beam 17 and probe 23 to describe an elliptical path the size of which is adjusted by varying the position of the cone 12. In the position of maximum penetration into the gear tooth gap the probe 23 presses on a sensing element 27 of the recording apparatus 26 against the force exerted by a compression spring 24. As the probe is retracted the gearwheel rotates so that after the probe has moved along its return path it will engage in the next tooth gap.
