Abstract

1,067,750. Feeding and packaging ampoules; carton inserts. R. BETZ. Dec. 20, 1963 [Jan. 3, 1963], No. 50477/63. Headings B8C, B8P and B8S. Apparatus for feeding ampoules into prefabricated receptacles comprises a feed hopper 2 having an outlet disposed above a rotatably mounted conveyer drum 1 in the form of a truncated cone, the surface of which drum has a plurality of grooves shaped to receive a plurality of ampoules, means for feeding corrugated receptacles to a loading station beneath the drum, the lower portion of the interior of the hopper 2 tapering to an asymmetrical throat section leading to the outlet and comprising two oppositely disposed guiding surfaces 12, 13 for accommodating a plurality of ampoules therebetween, the guiding surface 12 facing in a direction counter to the direction of rotation of the drum 1 terminating in a curved portion. In the machine shown, ampoules 10 in a sloping hopper 2 (Fig. 2, not shown), drop into recesses 6 in the tapered drum 1 and are carried thereby into corrugated receptacles, Fig. 3, fed from a magazine 4 by dogs 5 on a belt 3. The ampoules are restrained from jamming by the curved portion of the surface 12 of the hopper, and are held in the recesses 6 by cover strips 11 which allow broken ampoules to pass between them. Rollers 18 push the ampoules firmly into the corrugations. The receptacles may be one continuous strip which is cut between groups of ampoules after filling. Parts of the machine are preferably of transparent plastics material so that the filling operation can be viewed. When a more upright hopper is employed it is provided with a front cover sheet.
