Abstract

1,066,112. Riveting. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 25, 1965 [March 28. 1964], No. 12696/65. Heading B3U. In a method of joining a part 5, which can be drawn to a part 3 which has an aperture, the part 5 is placed on the part 3 and is acted on by a punch which has a conical leading end and a cylindrical following part. The dimensions of the punch and the part 3 are such that the part 5 is drawn as the punch passes through the aperture. The conical leading end of the punch causes a portion of un-reduced thickness (11) to be pushed through the aperture, Fig. 3 (not shown), and this expands radially at the end of the aperture to lock the parts together. There is also elastic axial shortening of the drawn part which tightens the joint. As shown in Fig. 4, two parts 4 and 5 can be drawn through the part 5 simultaneously. The parts 4 and 5 can be provided with a hole which is engaged by the leading end of the punch to locate the parts, or the punch may be provided with a short cylindrical extension, Fig. 2 (not shown), which has a cutting edge, which perforates the parts 4 and 5. The cylindrical part of the punch sizes the bore of the joint and the punch may be retracted or passed right through the work. The lower edge of the aperture in the part 3 may be burred or milled to improve the joint. The punch may have a shoulder 17 which contacts the work at the end of the operation. Projections on the shoulder 17 or the part 3 may be provided to form locking notches in parts 4 and 5. Alternatively such notches may previously have been provided on the parts 4 and 5.
